Design Goals
1. Create a Tense Horror-Action Experience
Build tension through limited visibility, confined spaces, and uncertain enemy placement.
Alternate between quiet exploration and sudden combat encounters to create strong pacing.
Make the player feel vulnerable without making the combat feel unfair or frustrating.
Use enemy sound cues, environmental movement, and visual foreshadowing to create anticipation.
2. Use Lighting and Environmental Storytelling to Build Immersion
Use lighting contrast to establish mood, highlight important spaces, and guide player attention.
Place environmental details such as blood trails, damaged furniture, abandoned equipment, and barricades to communicate past events.
Reveal the history of the location through visual clues instead of relying only on written exposition.
Give each area a clear atmosphere and narrative purpose within the level.
3. Combine Exploration, Puzzles, and Staged Zombie Encounters
Encourage players to investigate side rooms and environmental details for resources, clues, and optional discoveries.
Design simple, readable puzzles that fit naturally into the environment and do not interrupt the pacing.
Stage zombie encounters around specific spaces, player actions, and progression triggers.
Vary encounter composition, enemy direction, and arena layout to prevent combat from becoming repetitive.
Postmortem
What went well
Met the defined goals for each milestone and kept the project moving forward on schedule.
Managed time effectively, which allowed extra time for polish, iteration and improvements.
Used feedback from play testers to adjust the level layout, flow, and readability.
Established a strong horror atmosphere inspired by Ravenholm through lighting, environment composition and overall aesthetics.
What went wrong
The puzzle design was not developed as thoroughly as it could have been.
Certain player guidance elements were vague, making some objectives or paths less readable.
Some areas relied too much on atmosphere and ambiguity instead of clear visual communication.
Even better if
Conduct more playtests with a wider range of players to identify unclear navigation and puzzle issues.
Spend more time refining puzzle logic and making each interaction easier to understand.
Strengthen visual indications so players can better read where to go and what to interact with.
