Design Goals
Create a Focused Combat-Driven Half-Life 2 Experience
Build the level around multi-wave combat, enemy entrances, defensive positioning, and environmental interaction.
Begin the player with a Crowbar and Pistol, then gradually introduce the SMG, Gravity Gun, Shotgun, and mounted machine gun.
Increase encounter intensity as the player gains more weapons and tactical options.
End with a large Grand Hall battle followed by a focused encounter against a Combine Elite.
Telegraph Threats and Reward Player Observation
Use windows, mirrors, and connected rooms to reveal enemies before the player directly confronts them.
Allow observant players to anticipate patrols, ambushes, and enemy entrance directions.
Introduce enemies from hallways, bathrooms, side rooms, and spawn closets to create pressure from different angles.
Use narrow guest rooms and hallways for close-range encounters before expanding into larger combat arenas.
Turn the Hotel Environment Into a Combat Tool
Use explosive barrels, destructible walls, movable objects, and Manhacks as tactical resources.
Encourage players to use the Gravity Gun to manipulate the environment and create new combat opportunities.
Design the Grand Hall around multiple tactical options, including a mounted gun, ammunition positions, cover, explosive barrels, and a destructible chandelier.
Contrast the hotel’s former luxury with Combine occupation to support both combat readability and environmental storytelling.
Postmortem
What Went Well
Created a clear progression from limited early-game combat to a large multi-wave finale.
Used weapon placement to steadily increase the player’s combat options and sense of power.
Designed windows and mirrors that foreshadow enemies and reward careful observation.
Gave the Sewer, Laundry Room, Guest Rooms, Grand Hall, and Reception distinct gameplay purposes.
Designed the Grand Hall as a strong culmination where the player could use nearly every weapon and skill introduced earlier.
What Went Wrong
Some hallway and guest-room encounters were structurally similar, relying on enemies waiting behind doors or inside adjoining rooms.
The level’s critical path was highly linear, giving the player limited opportunities to choose between different routes.
The Grand Hall contained many combat elements at once, which risked overwhelming the player or reducing the readability of enemy entrances.
The final Reception encounter was smaller than the Grand Hall battle and could feel less climactic despite featuring a Combine Elite.
Environmental combat opportunities were concentrated in specific locations rather than consistently reinforced throughout the entire level.
Even Better If
Add one or two optional routes through service rooms or connected guest rooms to provide greater player agency.
Give repeated hallway encounters more distinct tactical identities through elevation, flanking, destructible cover, or changing enemy compositions.
Introduce each environmental combat mechanic in a safe or controlled situation before using it during a high-pressure encounter.
Improve the visual communication of enemy spawn doors so players can understand where the next wave will enter.
Break the Grand Hall encounter into clearer phases with stronger pauses, audio cues, or environmental changes between waves.
